The vocabulary

The four things that decide whether AI names you.

The concepts behind AI visibility, in plain English.

AI visibility
AI visibility is how often AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity recommend a specific business when their users ask for suggestions. Unlike traditional SEO, it depends on structured data, mentions on sites like Reddit and Wikipedia, and AI-readable content, not Google rankings.
llms.txt
llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of a website (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that gives AI crawlers a structured summary of a business and a directory of the pages they should read. It is the AI-era equivalent of robots.txt and sitemap.xml combined, designed to make a site easier for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI systems to understand.
Generative engine optimizationGEO
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimising content, structured data, and brand signals so that generative AI systems including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews cite, reference, or recommend a business in their answers. GEO replaces traditional SEO for queries answered directly inside an AI chat instead of a Google results page.
Answer engine optimizationAEO
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring web content so AI answer engines can extract a direct, quotable answer. It overlaps with GEO but focuses on the 40 to 60 word capsule the model lifts verbatim, rather than full-page recommendations.

01The problem

Your customers are asking AI about you. You don't know what it says.

Search moved. The buyer no longer scrolls ten blue links. They ask one question, accept one answer, and move on. That answer either names you, names a competitor, or names nothing at all.

37%

of consumers start with AI, not Google.

If ChatGPT or Claude doesn't know who you are, you're invisible to a growing share of the market.

16

AI engines now answer buyer questions.

Each one pulls from different sources and names different brands. Your visibility lives or dies in many places at once.

Tracked weekly

Every recommendation lost to a competitor.

SEO told you who ranks. AIRIX tells you who AI names. The leads going to whoever ChatGPT picked instead. That's the gap you can close this week.

The questions

The questions your customers ask AI about you.

The 12 things buyers type into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews before they call anyone. Answered.

  • How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
You get recommended by ChatGPT by showing up in the places ChatGPT actually reads. Those places aren't Google. Being #1 on Google does almost nothing inside an AI chat. AIRIX scans 16 AI platforms, shows you where you appear, where you don't, and helps you get into the answer.
  • Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead of me?
ChatGPT recommends your competitor because the sources it reads mention them more than you. Reddit threads. News. Schema on their site. Listings on review sites. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands in December 2025 and found brand mentions correlate roughly 3 times more strongly with AI citations than backlinks. A competitor with worse Google rankings can still dominate ChatGPT's answer. AIRIX shows you who's getting recommended instead of you, and where AI is pulling those mentions from.
  • How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my business?
The fastest way to check is to ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity the questions your customers ask. "Best [your category] in [your city]." See if your business comes up, how it's described, and which competitors get named first. Manual testing only covers a few platforms and one prompt at a time. AIRIX runs 32 live queries across 16 platforms in under a minute and shows you every mention, by platform.
  • Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. AI chatbots don't sell ad slots. You can't pay ChatGPT to recommend you the way you pay Google for ads. What you can pay for is the work that gets you recommended. AIRIX does that work for software pricing, not agency pricing.
  • What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of getting AI chatbots to recommend a business when their users ask for help. It's what replaces traditional SEO when the answer happens inside a chat instead of on a Google results page. GEO focuses on three layers: machine-readable structure (Schema.org, llms.txt), mentions on the sources AI trusts (Reddit, Wikipedia, industry sites), and citation-friendly content on your own pages.
  • What's the difference between GEO, AEO, and SEO?
SEO ranks you in Google's results. AEO (answer engine optimization) structures your content so AI can pull a direct, quotable answer out of it. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the full picture: content, structured data, brand mentions, all the signals that decide whether AI recommends you at all. Most businesses now need all three. A December 2025 study found only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews for the same query.
  • How is AI search different from Google?
AI search gives you a single conversational answer pulled from multiple sources. Google gives you ten blue links. The signals that decide who appears are different too. Google weights backlinks, on-page SEO, Core Web Vitals. AI chatbots weight structured data, mentions on Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube, and how easily their bots can read your pages. Ranking #1 on Google does not put you in ChatGPT's answer.
  • Does my Google Business Profile affect ChatGPT recommendations?
Indirectly, yes. ChatGPT doesn't query Google Business Profile in real time. But it learns from the directories and review sites that pull from your GBP data. An incomplete or inconsistent profile weakens the secondary mentions AI relies on. A complete, consistent GBP strengthens those mentions, but on its own it won't get you recommended. You also need structured data and mentions on the sources ChatGPT cites.
  • How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
Most businesses start appearing in at least one AI platform within 2 to 6 weeks of fixing the foundations. Strong, reliable visibility usually takes 8 to 12 weeks. AI platforms refresh on different cadences. Perplexity is fastest. ChatGPT's web search updates within days. ChatGPT's training-data citations only refresh when the underlying model is updated.
  • What is llms.txt and do I need one?
llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of your domain (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that gives AI crawlers a structured summary of your business and a directory of the pages they should read. Think robots.txt and sitemap.xml combined, for AI. You don't strictly need one to be recommended, but it materially helps AI understand who you are. AIRIX generates a tailored llms.txt for every Growth subscriber.
  • How do I rank on Perplexity?
Perplexity builds its answers heavily from community sources. A 2025 citation study found Reddit accounts for roughly 46.7% of Perplexity's cited sources, followed by primary research, named industry authorities, and Wikipedia. To rank on Perplexity you need active, on-topic presence on Reddit (real conversations, not promotional posts), authoritative mentions on industry sites, and structured data on your own pages so Perplexity's crawler can read you.
  • How much does AI search optimization cost?
AI search optimization ranges from a software subscription for a single-business tool like AIRIX up to a five-figure monthly retainer for enterprise consultancies and franchise programs. Same work, different delivery: software, or a human team. AIRIX sits at the software end. A single business stays visible across the major AI platforms without an agency retainer.
